LIVE FROM THE EMPTY PALACE

The Palace Theater is proud to present LIVE FROM THE EMPTY PALACE, a video series of live performances held in the empty auditorium of the Hilo Palace Theater.

While it’s currently unsafe to gather an audience in person, we are working on ways to bring the show to you! We hope you enjoy this series highlighting our deep pool of local Big Island talent. Stay healthy, stay informed, and see you back at the Palace when it’s safe out there.

Aguamelon “Until We’re There” Aguamelon is a 6 piece psychedelic jazz funk band made up of Asha Azama on keys, Elijah Livingston on guitar, Hawk on violin, Jimmy James Stapleford on drums, Erik Avery on bass, Reggie Tojo Smyth on congas, based on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Duo Dragonwing “Blackout” | Duo Dragonwing perform an incredible aerial chains act from the empty Palace Theater. Michael Radiff and April Leopardi are an aerial duo from Las Vegas, Nevada. While working as professional dancers, they fell in love with aerial arts and the world of circus, and came together as Duo Dragonwing.

Hana Hou with the father of Hawaiian Reggae Bruddah Waltah performing an acoustic version of the beloved radio classic.

Live looping artist Markus Mars performs an original composition entitled “Live from the Empty Palace.”
We are proud to pass the 50 episode milestone, and look forward to continue to showcase the diverse talent of Big Island. Created in response to the ongoing pandemic, LIVE FROM THE EMPTY PALACE is a video series of live performances held in the empty auditorium of the Hilo Palace Theater. Hana Hou with Higgs and his original laid back folk-hop. The Hawai’i Island based singer/rapper/songwriter is a featured artist on the Live from the Empty Palace 2020 Compilation album, now streaming on Spotify, iTunes, and all digital platforms.

Kumsa Maphalala is an 20 year old singer/songwriter/musician from the Big Island of Hawai’i. She is joined by fellow Big Island based musician Diga Kern on piano. Together they perform the original song “Stop Being Nice,” Live from the Empty Palace.

Keoni Thompson performs an original song which encapsulates his love for Kona and that Big Island life. Co-written with Derek Thomas.
Keoni is a featured artist on the LIVE FROM THE EMPTY PALACE 2020 COMPILATION album, available now on all digital music platforms

Kawohi Kamaka plays an acoustic version of his song about heartbreak “Played a Fool.” Kawohi Kamaka is a Kona based singer/songwriter and performs regularly for events and weddings. Kawohi’s music is streaming on all digital music platforms.

Hawai’i based aerialist Victoria Roos performs a breath taking hair hang act from above the Empty Palace stage.
Victoria is a multidisciplinary circus artist and has been performing a variety of acts for over 10 years. Her most recent work includes the role of Mo’o in ’Ulalena Maui, ArtMixx Supernova at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, TEDx Honolulu, Samadhi Live with Taimane, Viva Fest Las Vegas, and as a featured performer at the Palace Theater for Aerial Arts Hawaii productions

Hana Hou with Big Island based singer/songwriter Grace Scanlan. Grace is a featured artist on the Live from the Empty Palace 2020 Compilation Album streaming now on Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music and all music platforms.

Hamakua based singer/songwriter Hannah Kaplon is joined by Jeffrey Quin on the fiddle to perform her original lullaby “You,” Live from the Empty Palace.

Renowned pianist Cheryl “Quack” Moore is accompanied by Jennifer Tiboris on violin and Matthew Funes on viola. Together they perform the tango “Verano Porteño,” composed by Astor Piazzolla, from the stage of the Empty Palace.

HANA HOU with Pahoa based songwriter Robert Savory! He is joined by Michealoha Elam on trumpet and Loren Antolik on bass to preform his original song “Under the Monkey Pod Tree,” Live from the Empty Palace.

Two time Nā Hōkū Hanohano award winner Lightning Larry Dupio takes the Empty Palace Stage! Fresh off his second Nā Hōkū win for Rock Album of the Year, Larry is joined by his son Andrew Dupio on Bass, Ed Bisquera on keyboards, and Bert Bautista on drums. Together they perform “The Story of the Blues” from the album “Love and Lightning,” available now on all streaming platforms and where ever CDs are sold.

Sharing their Hawaiian Country tunes, Na Hoku nominated band of brothers Kolea plays their original protest song “Can’t You See” Live from the Empty Palace.

Starting the new year with some wholesome country tunes from Bending Elbows. “Country Town” is off their EP “That Lost Highway,” inspired by the 2018 Leilani eruption and showing that music is a healing force. Rob Taylor and Jamie Fries perform their genre bending, Folk-Hop song “A Man in the Making.” New music from Rob Taylor & the Re/Written Story is available now on all digital platforms.

Big Island punk rock band takes the Empty Palace stage for a short, fast, and loud performance of “Island Fever.” El Sancho’s self titled EP is available now on all digital platforms, with a new album on the horizon for early 2021.

Hana Hou with singer/songwriter Ka’ahele feating Na Hoku award nominee Ydine, Noa Eads on percussion, and very special guest Dimebag. Together they perform Ka’ahele’s “Won’t Stay” Live from the Empty Palace Stage. “Won’t Stay” is off her 2018 album “The Star That Met the Tide,” available now on all digital platforms.

D’Andrea Pelletier, also known as the Queen Of Opera, is a classically trained soprano. She shares a riveting performance of Rossini’s “Guisto ciel in tal periglio” Live from the Empty Palace stage.

The father of Hawaiian Reggae Bruddah Waltah Aipolani performs a classic of Hawaiian radio from the Empty Palace Stage.

Kumu Hula Iwalani Kalima performs with Hawaiian Slack Key guitarist and 3 time Na Hoku Hanohano award winner Ben Kaili. Together they perform hula to Kainani Kahaunaele’s classic melody “Lei Ho’oheno.”

Kona based singer/songwriter Keoni Thompson performs his laid back love song “You Make It Easy,” live from the Empty Palace stage.

Poet Cedric Wiggins performs his poem “Sober in Laos” from the Empty Palace Stage.

Hope Medford returns to the Empty Palace stage for a joyful Hana Hou performance accompanied by Tiana Malone Jennings and Drew Daniels.

Lopaka Rootz returns to the Empty Palace stage for a Hana Hou performance with some much needed chill vibes. Lopaka Rootz is a Big Island based reggae artist.

Brotherly duo OLELO bring their warm harmonies and authentic sensibilities to the Palace stage. Chase and Carl Kauhane perform their emPOWER Music & Arts POSI award winning single “Take The Leap,” Live from the Empty Palace!

Mother and son duo Annie Bunker and Wrenn Bunker Koesters perform a dreamlike aerial dance Live from the Empty Palace. Annie Bunker is a long-standing faculty member for the Dance department at both University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo and Hawaii Community College where Aerial Dance classes are offered.

Drew Daniels returns to the Empty Palace with a Hana Hou performance of his powerful new single “Circles.”

Pahoa based songwriter Robert Savory is joined by Michealoha Elam and Loren Antolik to preform his original song “I’ve Got a Good Song to Sing,” Live from the Empty Palace.

Na Hoku Hanohano award nominee Ydine returns to the Palace stage for a Hana Hou performance LIVE FROM THE EMPTY PALACE. Joined by Hope Medford, Ka’ahele, and Ethan Jones, they perform Ydine’s original song “Magik.”

Sharing country vibes from the Palace stage, Bending Elbows performs an original tune inspired by the 2018 Leilani eruption. “That Lost Highway” is the title track off their 2019 album.

Tiaya performs a dazzling aerial contortion act on a mini hoop Live From the Empty Palace.

Hope Medford brings divine feminine energy to the Palace stage.
Hope is accompanied by Ethan Jones on Bass, Sarah Bethany on Vocals, and Tiana Malone Jennings on Ukulele and Vocals.

Hana Hou with Ikaika Marzo performing the iconic Hawaiian slack key melody “Ku’uipo Onaona” on his grandmother’s guitar.

Blending soulful sensibilities with rap full of his signature wordplay, Hawai’i raised Higgs performs an uplifting original song inspired by our turbulent times.

 

Hana Hou with Ok2Change! Imani Gentry-Faust and Jay M. Lara step into the spotlight to share their powerful song “Day Into Night,” Live from the Empty Palace. Big Island singer songwriter Ka’ahele performs her original song “Lion in a Basket,” Live from the Empty Palace. “Lion in a Basket” is off her 2018 album “The Start That Met the Tide,” available now on all digital platforms.

This act contains mature subject matter and language. Viewer discretion is advised. Aurora Hermanns is making all the ghosts laugh with her stand up comedy live from the empty auditorium of the Hilo Palace Theater.

Hawaiian Slack Key guitarist and 3 time Na Hoku Hanohano award nominee Ben Kaili performing with Kumu Hula Iwalani Kalima & Hula Hālau O Kou Lima Nani ‘E. Together they perform hula to George Na’ope’s classic melody “Ka nani a’o Ka’u”
