It’s almost that time of year…. ROCKY HORROR!

ROCKY BOOST POSTTIME WARP, SELFIE BOOTH, COSTUME CONTEST AND MORE!

The Rocky Horror Picture Show first released in the United Kingdom on August 14, 1975 and at the Westwood Theater in Los Angeles late September of that same year. The film was considered a failure, and it was shelved. But it took a strange turn when it began playing at midnight at the Waverly Theater in NYC in 1976. Audience members began to come weekly and interact with the screen. This was repeated across the country as the movie began to show elsewhere and a cult film was born. In 2005, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.

Based on the 1973 musical stage production of the same title which was written by Richard O’Brien who plays Riff Raff in the movie, the film also stars Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick. The story centers on a young couple whose car breaks down in the rain near a castle where they seek a telephone to call for help. The castle or country home is occupied by strangers in elaborate costumes celebrating an annual convention. The couple discover the head of the house is Dr. Frank N. Furter, and apparently mad scientist who is really an alien transvestite. Frank N. Furter creates a living muscle man in his laboratory. The couple are seduced separately by the mad scientist and eventually released by the servants who take control.

The movie has been playing here at the Palace every Halloween since 2011. It seems the reaction from “virgins” who see the movie for the first time is nearly universal confusion. “What’s the big deal?” But once you’ve seen it, you can’t help but come back. In our Lobby we sell $5 Participation Kits with an instruction card inside to enhance your experience. This year we’ve added a selfie booth with Riff Raff. Before the movie starts everyone is also invited to watch the screen and get up to do the Time Warp dance. Lady Lily La Douce will be the MC again this year to keep the fun rolling from the costume contest to the Time Warp dance.
