ABOUT H.E.A.R.T.
Hilo Education Arts Repertory Theatre (HEART)is a 501(c)(3) professional non profit theatre company based in Hilo. Founded in 2020 by Producing Artistic Director Larry Reitzer, HEART is dedicated to serving East Hawaiʻi’s underserved and under-resourced communities through accessible, high-quality arts education and performing arts for theatre lovers of all ages. In just five years, HEART has earned 64 BroadwayWorld Award nominations (a record in the state) and is the 2025 BroadwayWorld Award Winner for Best Youth Theatre in Hawaiʻi, Best Play for A View from the Bridge, and Best Director for Larry Reitzer.
In its short history, HEART has produced more than 16 full-length productions, concerts, benefit performances, and holiday shows. The company works closely with Title I schools and provides free to very low-cost arts education and professional performance opportunities for youth and families who might otherwise lack access to the arts. HEART is known for producing both beloved family favorites and bold, socially relevant work that trusts young artists with meaningful, thought-provoking and challenging works.
Past productions include The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Cabaret, Chicago, Avenue Q, The Prom, Heathers and Grease, all featuring large casts of 30 to more than 100 performers. As HEART celebrates its five year anniversary, the company is preparing for what promises to be its biggest and best season yet, with upcoming productions of Dear Evan Hansen, Frozen, and Les Misérables and two plays that are yet to be announced.
Through inclusive multi-generational casting, community partnerships, and a strong commitment to excellence, HEART has become more than a theatre company. It is a cultural home where students, families, aunties, uncles, and volunteers come together to experience the transformative power of live theatre.
