Pictured here is Johnny DeMello on the original pipe organ in the Palace Theater back in the 1930s. In celebration of tomorrow's Silent Movie Night, here is some lore on the Mighty Palace Pipe organ(s)!

In 1929 this 3 manual 7-rank Robert-Morton pipe organ was built in Van Nuys, California, shipped and installed in the Palace Theater. In 1932 Johnny DeMello became the house organist, accompanying silent films and giving other performances. In 1940 this pipe organ and Johnny DeMello moved from the Palace Theater to the then Hilo Theater, where it was tragically destroyed in the 1960 tsunami along with the Hilo Theater itself.
In 2002, The Waikiki Theater in Honolulu closed down and the Robert-Morton pipe organ installed there was donated to the Palace Theater by Consolidated Amusement Co, Ltd to be added to the original pipe organ console.

In present day, the “Mighty Palace Pipe Organ” is up and functioning and can be heard from time to time before the movies, and is in the spotlight during our beloved Silent Movie Nights!

The Hilo Jazz Orchestra returns to the Palace stag

The Hilo Jazz Orchestra returns to the Palace stage this Saturday to perform a tribute to Frank Zappa live in concert, with special guest HAASTILE performing an opening set.
The Hilo Jazz Orchestra's last concert at the Palace in December was a full house, so don't wait too long to get tickets!
Doors, Box Office and Concessions open at 6pm - come early for snacks and seating.

The Hilo Palace Theater has been a landmark in Hilo since 1925 - this photo here is from the early 1930s! How many differences can you spot?

"The Palace was built on a scale that had never been seen outside of the capital city of Honolulu in it's time, and it was always the grandest theater on all the neighbor islands. One unusual feature was that the Palace’s structure was made entirely of redwood, imported from the Pacific Northwest. Fourteen huge redwood columns supported the wooden roof trusses which span the entire width of the building. The building’s façade is an elegant neo-classical design executed in stucco with wood molding accents."

Auditions for this year’s A Night of Island Star

Auditions for this year’s A Night of Island Stars are fast approaching!

The Palace Theater is looking for incredible local talent to perform in a family friendly variety show competition. Contestants are competing for the top prize of $1,000!

Do you have an awe inspiring or unusual talent? We want to see it!

Performers of all persuasions are welcome to audition Thursday April 25th at the Palace Theater, and aerialist auditions on Sunday April 28th at The Airhouse.

Final contestants will perform as part of a full length variety show on Saturday, June 1st. Finalists are judged on Entertainment Value, Originality, Stage Presence, and Execution. The winner will be selected by a panel of 3 mystery judges live on the night of the show and awarded the grand prize of $1,000.

Solo vocalists must have a backing track for auditions, solo acapella will not be considered. Musicians, singers & songwriters are welcome to try out, however due to the production logistics of this show, full bands are not considered at this time. Video auditions are welcome. All video submissions must be received by Thursday April 25th and sent to islandstars@hilopalace.com

The 2nd annual Island Stars variety show is a Palace benefit produced in association with Malama Arts.
